However, as we have learned that Capitalism left to itself can self-distruct, ie, Madoff, Wall Street excesses. Therefore, we need government to act as the policeman for protecting the consumers. Otherwise, Capitalistic greed will usurp the needs of the people. IMO, we read of to many examples where greedy capitalistic behavior has self-distructed.


This is an absurd statement. Capitalism has not been left to itself. It didn't self-destruct. What we saw and continue to see (i.e. Solyndra) is the continued self-destruction of politically backed financial cronyism. Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of this. But it was anything but free market capitalism that has failed us.
