If the public pays for your healthcare, it thinks it has the right to insist that you would not engage in behavior which may increase costs. They'll make you wear a helmet, eat healthy, stop skydiving, lose weight, take care of Your children in a certain prescribed way...... etc. It makes some sense - why should you and I have to come up with a million dollars a year to take care of someone who smokes like a chimney and refuses even to try to quit smoking? Or for someone who refused to wear a seatbelt and broke the neck?

I'm sure there must be a solution, a sensible compromise somewhere out there, but it's not easy to find. And probably even harder to maintain. Part of the compromise must be to keep the government intrusion to a minimum (good luck with that).
