If the public pays for your healthcare, it thinks it has the right to insist that you would not engage in behavior which may increase costs

Whenever I hear this argument, I say that this is a false alternative. There is another alternative - end public financing of healthcare. Then I get stares like I'm from the Moon. It's not even in people's minds that this is an option. The choice is: government, or more government.
