Sale of Androids by current Androidians up 102% last two weeks, in front of iPhone release.

Of course, not every iPhone 5 buyer will be upgrading from an older iPhone. Gazelle also saw a ramp in submissions of Google Android and BlackBerry phones in the run-up to today’s event. Kennedy says Gazelle has received 102% more Android phones over the past two weeks than it usually does and a 49% increase in BlackBerry phones. The most popular Android handset submission has been the HTC EVO 4G, a high-end Sprint Nextel smartphone. That could be a sign that people believe Sprint will finally offer an iPhone for the first time this year. Indeed, Kennedy says, “…we believe rumors of a multi-carrier iPhone is driving high volumes of Android and BlackBerry trades.

It all adds up to positive signs for Apple. Since the number of handset trade-ins tends to be relatively small compared to the overall number of new iPhone purchases from Apple or its retail partners, Kennedy is confident the iPhone 5 will be a huge bestseller for Apple. “With these numbers, we expect millions of people to want the new iPhone the moment it hits shelves,” she says.
