Z, like I said, I feel for your father and how you have to support him. I don't share too much personal info on these threads, but all I'll say is that I too have had almost my "fair share" of similar situations.

The difference is that I don't expect government to help at all. Safety net and relief programs are nice, but none of that will solve the real problems. We live in a world where careers can be cut short at the whim of some upper manager. Even here at Intel, people are let go all the time. But it's not like Intel can't afford to keep them employed.

Now here's the thing. I don't see anywhere in the contract of life where these upper managers or upper classes owe anything to their subordinates. If they give me a job, great. I'll make sure that what I produce makes me too valuable to layoff. If they're not smart enough to realize that, I'll go elsewhere.

That's where I disagree with the notion that the upper classes supposedly dictate how the lower classes ought to live. That only happens when the lower classes let them. Or when the upper classes start pitting groups of subordinates against each other. You see that all the time, especially in politics.

You don't have to play their game. And that's the bottom line.
