Al Gore backs RecycleBank model 7 October 2011 | By Katie Coyne

People will recycle more if you make it “fun” and “save them money” was the advice dished out by former US vice-president Al Gore at a RecycleBank event in New York.

Gore spoke to an audience of sustainability experts, NGOs and corporate leaders about how consumers and business can help tackle climate change.

The star of the climate change movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ argued that change is motivated by “value and vision” but that there were barriers to overcome.

“If there is a way to give people a monetary incentive to develop an ingrained habit like recycling or energy usage, make it fun and connect them to businesses that save them money, it can be enough to get them over the ‘want to’ line,” said Gore. “I’ve seen some amazing communities where that is happening.”

He argued that the change can build up until it reaches a “tipping point” and become “cataclysmic” and that campaigners should try to use this model to effect change.

He added: “Crisis is one word in our language, but in some languages it is represented by two words - danger and opportunity.”

Business is capable of making “incredible efficiencies” and “rapid advancements” through research and development and innovation motivated by a “looming market” or demand for climate change friendly products and services, he added.

“Scientists used to say that we were loading the dice; changing the odds that these extreme weather events would take place. Now they are saying that we’re painting more dots on the dice.

“These extreme weather events are becoming bigger and more frequent. In the past year, more than 200 cities in the US alone broke their high temperature records. If we allow this to continue, the country will literally become unrecognisable.”

RecycleBank is a scheme in the US and UK that incentivises household recycling with discounts from business.
