I've been avoiding a National Geographic Special on the plague of methamphetamines, but tonight I watched it on Netflix.

Meth originated in Japan about a hundred years ago. It came in to the US in the Northwest -- Seattle and Portland, and has spread nation-wide. Now the main 'commercial' source is Mexico.

Most of the show consisted of work done by a deputy sheriff in Multnomah County, Oregon. The street scenes were in Portland. The deputy had a database which enabled him to track the physical condition of meth addicts via photographs taken at intervals over their meth history. These photographs were painful to behold. Once normal people turned into zombies, developing sores on their skin and losing their teeth. Their eyes told the story. If they didn't die, their lives were destroyed. Only a few were able to drag themselves out of this hell, with great difficulty.

One reported estimate troubled me greatly: one in five college students have tried meth at least once. I had no idea it was this bad.

I don't care to follow any of the links in that post, but I'm pretty sure the 'elk' in this instance: '#OccupyPortland has taken the elk' refers to a life size (or larger) statue of an elk near City Hall.

I have no patience with these 'occupy' jerks, meth addicts or cookers, and the otherwise fine city that permits them free rein. If my son didn't live in Oregon City and I didn't have friends and history in the general area, I wouldn't go within a hundred miles of the place.
