The vast majority of Muslim women in Egypt put on the headscarf, known as the higab, either for religious or social reasons, but there's little expectation that Christians wear it.

The MSM keep writing as if it's always been that way in Egypt. But all you have to do is look at photos from fifty years ago to tell that it's a new thing for middle or upper class girls to wear hijab. It's part of the rising tide of Islamism. Enforcing hijab on Christian girls is not a break from the pattern, it's the next natural step.
