MELA VS VERISANTE

There are some significant differences between the Verisante Aura, and the MelaFind in terms of design, effectiveness and market potential.
-The Verisante Aura uses an advanced laser scanning system to identify 21 different biochemical markers in the skin, enabling the device to detect all types of Skin Cancer in under a second.
-Mela uses a computerized imaging technology which compares a lesion to thousands of images in a data base but the results take a few minutes.
-The MelaFind only screens for Melanoma while the Verisante Aura is able to identify all types of Skin Cancer and is much faster. Melanoma only represents 4% of Skin Cancer so Mela appears to be missing out on the other 96% of the market.
- Verisante is already underway with clinical studies for the early detection of lung and colon cancer, demonstrating the company’s commitment to development of revolutionary technology for early cancer detection, and creating a pipeline of future products to market.

Device sensitivity is a crucial clinical consideration.
-The Verisante Aura has demonstrated 98% sensitivity and 78% specificity for Melanoma while the MelaFind demonstrated 98% sensitivity but only 9.5% specificity for the detection of Melanoma. Too many false positives represent a key clinical concern and are why the FDA recommended approval by a very narrow margin for Mela.

Device design is also a big consideration.
-Verisante has a very sleek modern design to their system, consisting of small handheld device attached to a console that can easily be moved around.
-The Verisante Aura has a tiny probe that can access lesions all over the body.
- The system also uses inexpensive disposable tip covers representing another source of revenue.
-MelaFind has a very large probe and will be more difficult to access lesions in some areas. The probe also requires some preparation to the skin’s surface.
