"The pull-through of the desktop is what Noorda was trying to address"

Noorda thought it was just some combination of desktop applications to buttress the NOS and cause people to buy Netware. But Noorda never had anything to compete with a cheap operating system on the desktop.

Novell fought the wrong battle from the start. And because people were battered by the experience now when a new opportunity to do what Noorda wanted to do arises it is ragged and revenue poor Netscape playing Hector to MSFT's Achilles.

The web server/browser has the power to displace the operating system/application on the desktop.

Were Novell to adopt a strategy that seated its NOS on the web server (which for now can just be a plug in to the network) and invited third parties to develop browser apps that accessed intranet data bases etc. then it would succeed at what Noorda tried to accomplish on the last battlefield.

However this new battle requires the ability to make strategic alliances (like DEC and MSFT did) with browser oriented companies in exchange for sales of the NOS base. It also requires better marketing, better products, and better complete sales solutions in one box.

They aren't doing this at Novell. Maybe they can with the RIGHT new CEO. (Just think what would happen to Novell's stock if the market found Novell in a leadership position in intranet web servers.)

Look what Jim Clark was able to do with Netscape. He took a few grad students at the University of Illinois and a lot of vision and put in some money and bang, a whole new direction to this industry.

With Marengi touting himself for CEO you just have to shake your head.
