The US political system is a direct result of the US Constitution. The system where a variety of political parties can flourish and have representation is parliamentary democracy with proportional representation. You find it mostly in Europe. Our founding fathers deliberately stirred away from that, partly because they wanted to entice all the different States to join the Union.
