I used to think that an encoder would be needed for recording DirecTV, but you don't want to do it that way. The incoming video is already digitally encoded. You will record it before it is decoded, so no encoder is needed. If you decode it first, then try to reencode the video, you loose quality.

PCs will be different when it comes to recording video. Lots of sources to record video from, not all encoded.
