The wrong question we've been asking over the past few decades is "how can we get money." The proper question should be what can I contribute and/or produce. American strength has always been it's productivity, which has been partly the result of good resources and partly the result of innovation. Productivity is gone and, at least as we've defined it in the past, it is not coming back. That is the question we should have been asking in the past. Now we should be asking if we are ready and able to deal with the really hard times which may be coming. Previous generations were able to go back home to the farm or something when times got rough, like in the 1930's. Those options are not available for most people now.

International corps have transfered productive work to Germany and Asia, which have boomed. Productivity produces value. The government can guide policy to encourage productivity but looking to the government to take care of welfare needs is very limited. Welfare is a form of charity. Charity is possible when there is an excess of productive wealth. When the average citizen is earning more than they spend then society, via the government, can support the needs of those needing welfare. When the average citizen is non-productive, society does not have the wealth to care for those less fortunate. It might sound like a kind hearted idea to send a job to a poor Pakistani or to bring millions of illegals in to the country to work for less wages... it helps those people and reduces the cost of goods. Now that goods are cheap at Walmart, however, the production of America is lost. We can no longer afford to help our own or to be a benefactor to the rest of the world. We were once the worlds creditor now we are the biggest debtor. Liberals seem to think they are entitled to live the lifestyle of their parents and grand parents, but the society of their parents and grand parents was a prosperous society. That is a society and life style which is no longer affordable for the average joe and josephine, and it is going to get much worse unless the productivity problem is solved. Joe and Josey have lost their home, have no jobs and can't even afford the Walmart goods. Any ideas about how to turn that around?

Tutoring children to help them excel academically is an honorable contribution btw. 'Enrichment' usually means something else but you can clarify that for yourself.
