Kal,
There's a lot of vested interests involved. Way more than just MSFT. That's why we hear so much dis-information.
This bit about NT & the enterprise comes right out of the Joseph Goebbls school of propaganda: tell a lie and people are skeptical, tell a BIG lie and people will believe you.
You know, in the entertainment business, sales figures are always "inflated" (a nice word) to encourage more people to go to the movies, see the broadway show, or buy the CD. Record producers "buy" the inventoried copies of albums to make their group go gold or platinum. Movie producers report box office grosses to Variety that include "anticipated" grosses at certain theatres.
Why does it work? Well, everybody in America loves a winner. Do you know that MSFT, except for some creative accounting, actually LOST $60 million last quarter? Did you see that reported in the Wall St. Journal?
Gates figures that if he makes a big deal out of everything MSFT publishes, it will encourage people to buy the product. If IT managers make their purchasing decisions based on hype by that nitwit, MSFT will continue to do just fine and businesses that use MSFT software will continue to fumble along, paying the premium all along the way making lots of work for "experts" and consultants and spawning an enormous propaganda network for the continuation of the status quo.
That is why someone has the audacity to write an article claiming that NT will be the dominant enterprise server next year. They know it's a bunch of bullshit. But who cares? It may convince the public to buy NT. Listen to Gates. He does this all the time. He'll continue to do it until it stops working.
cheers,
