Pretty uninformed statement Zak. You haven't got a clue what a design patent is used for, do you?

Hint: Back in the late 1980's, early 1990's, Bill Gates stole the Windows interface design directly from Apple when Apple let them in without 'no compete' protection of some sort, such as a design patent, as Gates got MS Word and Excel running on the Mac - before Windows. After Gates put Windows out, Apple tried to sue, but couldn't because they had no protective legal basis.

So.... along comes the Jobs-led Apple iPhone internal development which Apple patented profusely - they wanted no one to copy their design. Period. Of course Apple knew that if the iPhone was successful, many would try to copy it and compete - Apple just wanted to make sure the competitors had to design their own damn interface.

Guess what? Looks like Samsung may have finally got the message with their latest outing. And Microsoft was smart enough to not cross Apple again and have worked on a phone with an entirely different interface design which is not an iPhone/iPad lookalike or workalike. Jobs just wanted the competitors to work on their own R&D nickel.

That worthless design patent is keeping the Galaxy out of Australia.
