Check out Bruce Lipton's "The Biology of Belief." The cell membrane determines what messages get to the interior of the cell and access the nucleus, signalling what proteins are necessary to sustain the body. The genes are blueprints that are called upon to provide the template for the manufacture of amino acids to build the required proteins. The genes don't determine what happens. The environment and the signals that the membrane allows through to the nucleus do. If the body is under stress, and the immune system is under attack, the system is undermined and responds accordingly. Therefore the mind's perception of what is happening is an essential part of the genomic response.
