It is well known that Mr. Pfeiffer is unhappy with the constant rapid changes in computer technology. He would much rather have the business turn into something like refrigerators, where there is minimal technology challenge, and a company can get ahead and differentiate itself with trivial features and massive advertising. He also has had a somewhat rocky relationship with Intel. He will do anything he can to try to wrest control of the industry from Intel , hopefully leaving him in a more powerful position.
I have owned Compaq's, but will never buy another- in general they are overpriced and underperforming machines. But they do sell a lot of them and appear to be gaining market share. I doubt if this will last because eventually almost all computers will be built to order, a field where they have minimal experience and no marketing advantages. Meanwhile Compaq and Intel are uneasy bedfellows who need each other.
