Gross says the average age of cars on the road is going up faster than ever as people look for ways to trim household budgets in a difficult economy. He says the age range of cars that come into the chain’s shops used to be about six to 10 years but in the past few years has widened to four to 12 years. He says this reflects not only longer ownership, but an earlier shift away from dealership service, which tends to be more expensive than other service outlets
