Lucius - Well, I guess I could also say Andy Grove would like to sell ONLY 300 MHZ Pentium II's at top dollar!! Compaq has much more competition in it's part of the world than Intel has in the MPU business, so Eckhard has to be somewhat cutthroat, don't you think? As for BTO, they claim to have implemented, we will see. Also, CPQ is much more than just a low end PC maker, they make their bucks on servers, and have some nice things coming out, like fiber channel, etc. Tandem should help them in the enterprise. Besides, as you move up the food chain in computers, it's much more than just BTO in my opinion. In the large server 24x7 arena, service and support get much more important than just price, and it seems to me that CPQ might have an edge in that department. For a commodity box maker, these guys have bought Tandem this year and accumulated 6 billion in cash. Not too shabby for building boxes, wouldn't you say??

PS - Compaq management is on record as stating they will reach 50 Billion in revenues in Y2K, so I think they are planning on selling lots more stuff in the near future. As a shareholder, I hope they deliver. If not, they can just buy the additional revenues with their cash and stock!! <ggg> |
