Yo Charlie, don't forget what BORL really needs right now. Credibility in IS and enterprise. I say that IS managers are looking at BORL even closer today than they were a few days ago. From a technology point this is great. If BORL can get an IT credibility boost (they are already doing well in getting IT's attention), as well as a lead on some serious IT opportunities for Delphi Enterprise (and soon comming C++ BUilder Enterprise, and JBuilder Enterprise), then the acquisition will pay even if the CORBA technology never did.
However, do not understimate the future business case of CORBA enabling technologies. I am a senior architect in a $100M company. We are currently spec'ing our next generation of products. CORBA is at the heart of our enterprise products. We are not unique in this. BORL, having strong set of enterprise tools that are built on very good ORB technology (while fully supporting MS "standards" as well) is, in my estimation, the most solid provider of development tools in the market.
Would somebody like to list the companies that
1) Have solid C++ and Java RAD development tools.
2) Tools from 1 above, that scale from $99 lanuage, to $45,000 enterprise.
3) Support both open standards such as JBeans and CORBA, as well as COM/ActiveX (and other MS' "standards").
Really, a key question is 'who are BORLAND's competitors'? |
