Our government has drifted so far away from this that we now allow private industry, in the form of the Fed banks to actually create money at will and completely distort the purchasing power of the dollar to their own ends. The Fed bank is hardly private. The head of the Fed bank serves at the pleasure of the president who is an elected official.
