Gaddafi's death: Libya's new rulers 'stained' by manner of his death, says Philip Hammond

Britain denounced the apparent execution of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi by rebel fighters yesterday as a "stain" on the reputation of the country's new rulers.

New footage emerged on the internet of fighters holding a silver revolver at the former Libyan leader's temple in a chaotic lynching as he was surrounded by members of the rebel militia.

Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, reflected widespread international concerns, including among nations backing the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) that Col Gaddafi was subjected to summary justice.

"It's certainly not the way we do things, it's not the way we would have liked it to have happened," he said. "The fledgling Libyan government will understand that its reputation in the international community is a little bit stained by what happened."
