Solar cell quotes likely to continue dropping
Nuying Huang, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 25 October 2011]

The traditional weak fourth quarter in the solar market is likely to push solar cell quotes further down this week. Quotes of solar cells last week were around US$0.55-0.58/watt, but this week are likely to drop to US$0.50-0.53/watt. Industry sources indicated that solar cell firms have been suffering from price drops and are concerned about how to weather the storm in the fourth quarter.

In addition to demands for high conversion efficiency and lower priced solar cells, customers have been taking the technology roadmap of solar cell makers into consideration to determine long-term partnerships, according to industry sources.

The market has been concerned with the US debt problems that might push back the timeline for the US solar market to really shine. The pessimistic views have been seen as a likely factor to push the price of solar cells down further.

Due to oversupply of solar products, downstream firms have been reportedly using technology roadmaps as one of the criteria when making procurement orders. The solar cell makers' technology roadmaps have to be able to accommodate changes in the solar market. Furthermore, buyers want to procure products from firms that are strong and competitive in the long-run, hence technology matters, added industry sources.
