I get your point, koan, but you run the risk of arguing that people who disagree with you are dumb simply because they disagree with you; and smart because they agree with you; and correct because they agree with you. After a few disagreements, that can well leave you alone on an island surrounded by everyone else.

An illustration. One of the genuinely smart foreign policy thinkers of the 70s and 80s was Henry Kissinger; yet, with few and somewhat notable exceptions, I could not have disagreed more with him. His Chilean policy was about as wrong headed as it could be, but not because Kissinger was dumb. But because he valued much different outcomes than I did.
