>>As I was reading reviews of the Velodyne subs, I noticed mention of a microphone set up device for balancing the output to the room. Can you fill me in on that?

I take it from your post that the Denon AVR-2807 is not necessary for a 2/1 setup? So, if I bought a Velodyne powered sub and a pair of Paradigms, I'd be able to replace the Altec Lansing 6021 on the LR TV? Does it have or need any equalization?<<

Some Velodyne subs come with a microphone that you use to balance the output between the subwoofer and the main speakers. I believe the system can even apply an EQ curve to flatten the response and overcome room problems.

My Denon receiver also came with a mic, with which it can automatically set itself up for optimum response within the room, both in terms of equalization and time delays between channels. Pretty cool stuff.

I wouldn't try connecting the Paradigms directly to a TV set. The internal amp won't have anywhere near enough power. But you could use just a stereo receiver. If it has a separate sub-woofer line-level output, that would be great, but not absolutely necessary.

Also, the Reference Signature series is Paradigm's highest-end line, but the Reference line (one step down) delivers really great sound for quite a bit less. Even the Studio series are quite good, and you'd save even more. Any of them, together with a good sub, would be a big improvement over the Altecs.
