Tero I think what Maurice means by his attempts
at humour is that GSM was a mainly government
mandate; where as CDMA standards were industry
designed, signed off by government.

Now for a comment about the one of the
two companies that Scandianvia should be
very proud of; Ericcson. Unlike Nokia,
Ericsson is eschewing CDMA. This is MOT
in reverse. The big issue isn't so much
cellular, albeit it is an issue, but PCS and
the ability for high speed data.
In the cellular arena, GSM/TDMA rely on analog
channels for the data services. In the all digital PCS
service, how will they accomplish 19.2 Kb/s over
8 Kb/s or 13 Kb/s ADPCM ckt.? This will be
a neat trick. Yes, WITH COMPRESSION, you
can realize that speed, but we are talking TRUE
speeds of 19.2 Kb/s sans compression.

This is where CDMA has the theorectical advantage.
It going over one big channel of 1.25 Mhz instead of
30 Khz slot, affords it the flexibility to use as much BW
to accomplish the task. GSM/TDMA isn't that flexible.
This also hold true for WLL. So far the cellular industry
has been a talk first and limited data medium. What
happens to the Internet for these mobile warriors.

It wouldn't be able to access the web like you do with
the traditional wireline methods. It will take special
packet data modems or something more sophisticated.
These problems are being research and as far as I'm
concern the CDMA crowd has the advantage. This is
one reason that Lucent and Nortel chosse to
build flexible platforms which you can change out cards to
offer either CDMA or TDMA. When the the TDMA shows
it's inability to deliver what the customer needs for data
the switch will be to CDMA or what is ever increasingly
becoming the buzz, a CDMA/TDMA/FDMA cocktail.
Vodka martini, stirred not shaken for me.
