The History of of populism/progressivism in this country is that these movements are able to attract a sizeable minority of voters who put forth a candidate that loses (William Jennings Bryan, Eugene Debs). Then one of the major parties, usually, the Democrats, adopts one or more of their more popular proposals (minimum wage) and incorporates most of the populist supporters into its fold.

Most Americans want a middle of the road President (unless there is a crisis--war or depression) who will make the trains run on time. Absent a great financial collapse Obama's in deep trouble with the electorate if he seems to be on the wall Street protestors side too much. I do think the election will be very close based on current circumstances with the states of Ohio and Florida and possibly Pa. determining the outcome.

If Romney can come across as the more business like candidate who can "fix" the economy he's got a real shot at it. Furthermore, it appears likely that Obamacare will not be able to fund itself as currently constructed and has got tobe taken apart and put back together again in order to work. A downside in the campaign.
