permian age: About 290 million years ago. One of the theories is that intense volcanic activity spewed out massive amonts of CO2. This raised the temperature about 5 degrees f. That was just enough to melt the methane hydrates and this raised the temperature another 5 degrees.

95% of all life on earth became extinct. Another theory is the acidification of the oceans which are becoming more acidic now.

In any event we are boiling the planet.
