The one data point I remember was :

the average house some time around 1940 or 1950 was between 900 and 1000 square feet.

(This is sort of embarrassing, but ...) I am not sure I have ever even SEEN a house that size.

Also (just like automobiles now as compared to a long time ago) --

think about how much legislated regulation / safety features are forced upon home builders / home buyers now,

all of which vastly increase the price.
