Gregory, Thanks for the excellent posting. I happened to be at Bell labs, when they were experimenting with optical computers and introduced a UNIX based PC. They have failed to cash in on both ideas/inventions. With Lucent's hunger for markets things may be different. It is a long way from research to commercialization. Some examples, Bell Labs invented the transistor, but Sony cashed in. Bell labs developed UNIX, but SUN Microsystems cashed in. Xerox developed GUI(Graphical Interface), but Apple & Microsoft cashed in. SUN developed JAVA, guess who's going to cash in?
