Obama originally told Summers he would get Bernankes job, to get Summers to take the job he had. But as time went by both Obama and Geithner soured on Summers as he was running the economic policy like he was a czar paying no attention to anyone else like Roemer et al. So as the time got closer to replace Bernanke, Geithner told Obama to just keep Bernanke according to Ron Suskinds book confidence Men.
