All we lower middle class kids are insecure. I can remember going to UC Berkely and thinking here are 30,000 kids all smarter than me. And I was a kid brought up in a resonably middle class working household and blond and given every break and a big reader even as a kid. Read all 35 of the oz books and 20 or so Freddy the Pigs books-lol.

Still, I was intimidated and jealous of academia. Worked in a paper bag factory for two years after high school. I was very resentful of the kids at UC Berkeley (jealous) and understood them not at all. I can only imagine how hard it would have been to get out if I was black! Life was so hard for them. Racism is terrible. it totally debilitates a person and study habits are easy once learned but hard as hell for anyone who has not learned them and gotten use to it.

Once a kid learns how to learn they are fine. And why head start is just such a huge answer. Get the kids used to learning right out of the gate. For the poor uneducted, society has to sort of help the parents by providing free pre school as they don't know how to teach their kids to study. They often jsut yell at them-lol. Head start teaches that which is the most important thing to know. I never once had to tell either of my girls to do their homework. It was as natural as brushing their teeth. But I never did homework in high school.

Once you learn how to learn, school becomes a piece of cake for most. Jews, Danes, fins, Swedes and the Japanese educate their entire society. We can do the same.

This is why I am so sure about the need for free education to build up our country and especially pre school. I have been there and done that. And I had every break in the world and still it was a tough row to hoe with lots of insecurity.
