Can you think of an application that could not make use of a spelling checker? The reason Windows doesn't have a built-in spelling checker is that Microsoft isn't competing with another OS and that universal tool is probably the primary reason people purchase, launch, and wait for Word. Otherwise, most people would use Wordpad which probably has 99% of the features needed to do 99% of typical wordprocessing work. Microsoft isn't doing anything to make anything easier, they are doing everything to make Microsoft the only option.
