Happened to a good friend of mine who works in a large company....the scam worked like this....

After several bad performance reviews all documented and even signed off by the employee, my buddy decided to terminate his secretary. He went to HR to coordinate the termination....not knowing that the secretary he was going to terminate was boinking the HR person he spoke to. The HR guy gave her a head's up on her impending separation...so she walked in and filed a complaint with HR claiming my buddy had been harassing her, asking her out, etc....absolutely no evidence to support the charges beyond her word.

He was suspended pending the "investigation"....and the matter managed to find its way into the paper.....it caused him quite a bit of angst before she finally accepted a small settlement to leave. Afterward, he found out about the scam and went after her personally for defamation, etc....The Company refused to pursue recovering the extortion money.
