So much time here has been devoted to the cost savings of a long
distance phone call over IP versus the public phone networks. But
will business use these services? Are corporations willing to risk
losing a phone call to save a couple of bucks? I am not saying there
is not a market for IP telephony but how fast corporations may utilize
it remains to be seen (I think a long time). However, two markets
where corporations will be active in IP will be in fax and store and
forward voice. Fax is the perfect service to go over IP and this is
one huge market: somewhere between 30-50% of international phone
calls are fax. Store and forward voice (voice-mail) will be huge
as well although we have not heard much about it yet. One way voice
is easier to deal with technologically and there are many business
applications for this as well.

Privately held Open Port Technology (www.openport.com) is rapidly
emerging as a company that will be a leader in the technology necessary
to transport fax and store and forward voice over IP. It is one thing
to send a fax over the internet; it is another for a carrier to be
able to handle thousands of faxes a minute. Open Port is the
technology behind UUFAX, the announced faxing service from UUNET/
Worldcom. I can assure you that there will be other very large
companies getting into the fax and store and forward voice markets
very soon. Frankly, I think these markets have much greater near
term potential. This is a place where corporations will spend their
money and reap huge savings. Two way phone conversations over IP
is some time off for the corporate user.
