Ahhaha - You may be the person to answer some questions I have. I need to get a clearer picture of what we are up against. So far I have found the following: A great source of info is found at: cabledatacomnews.com In the United States today there are more than 11,000 cable television systems owned by several hundred companies. Most do not have internet access or have some "home-grown" system. Here are the biggest MSOs & Telcos Deploying Cable Data Services in North America and who is providing their Internet access: Adelphia Communications = PowerLink Bresnan Communications = BresnanLink Cablevision Systems = Optimum Online COGECO Cable = ? (French) Comcast = @Home Cox Communications = @Home GTE = GTE cable modem service Jones Intercable = Jones Internet Channel High Speed Internet Access Marcus Cable = @Home MediaOne (formerly Continental Cablevision) = MediaOne Express Media General Cable = none Rogers Cablesystems = none Service Electric =none Shaw Communications = none Tele-Communications, Inc. = @Home Time Warner Cable = roadrunner US West TeleChoice = TeleChoice OnLine Videotron Communications = PowerSurf In short, I think we can say the following: 1) ATHM has the best Internet delivery for cable system owners by far. 2) ATHM has the most contracts with cable system owners. They are: Cablevision Comcast Cox Intermedia Marcus TCI 3) The closest competitor to @Home is probably Roadrunner from Time/Warner but it is in only 13 cities and has had bad ratings from customers. 4) People are constantly talking about how the competition in high bandwidth Internet access is going to catch @Home but nobody specifically states who the competition is. Who could it be: ú Satellite? - not likely - years away and you would need transponders on home dishes to interact. ú Phone lines? - Copper has its limits and people say that real time video interaction is beyond its limits. Can you think of someting I am missing? Now for the dangers to @Home investors: Stock depression: I read people saying there is danger of selling by principals. Statements like: "I believe it is January 19 that the lock up expires." Could you explain what this means and what you think about this. Microsoft: Microsoft is looking for a good new revenue stream. They have the ability, with their cash, to arm-twist cable owners into not renewing their contracts with @Home when they come up for renewal. In general, Microsoft would like to be in the position of @Home - the primary provider of internet access. They have the cash to go to battle. They realize that there is not room for 2 in this game. They would like to have something like WebTV take over and build itself up to where it owns the market. The best solution does not always win (a case in point - our keyboards are designed to prevent humans from typing). It is who can elbow their product into the monopoly position. Do you see a real danger here? Incidentally, you are talking about your worry of @Home's ability to handle the office work load that is comming. Recently, one of the major wall street analyists really slammed @Home because they are building a very large office complex to handle all the future office work load. the analyist laughed and pointed out how few accounts @Home had and what a stupid idea it is to spend all that capital on non-existant customers.
