I'm glad to see your daughter is having a great experience at Davis. And I agree, good experiences depend both on what the school offers and how aggressively students use what's provided.

Grafton tends to overgeneralize. Which is surprising since his own campus has a reputation for being much more undergraduate friendly than most of the other Ivies. Nor does he mention the stellar education offered at places like Williams, Amherst, Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and a host of other similar schools. No doubt there are many in the midwest and the west. I just don't know that nearly as well.

But the overall structural things he points to--enticing star faculty with lower undergraduate loads, most teaching done by adjuncts, and so on has been a problem at many large state institutions for some time. Nothing new about it.
