I heard the story once about Kennedy from a detective being interviewed on tv. It sounded credible. Ted and MaryJo left the party together to go fool around but thought they were being followed by reporters. So Ted got out of the car on a dark road and told MaryJo to drive to town and he'd walk back to the party which they both did. She was not familiar with the bridge and was probably a little drunk too so she went off the bridge because she was driving too fast. Meanwhile Ted went to his room from the party and never realized MaryJo was missing for hours. When she didn't show up anywhere he started looking for her and found the car off the bridge. Then he needed a story to hide the fact he was trying to cheat on his wife which would ruin his political career.
