I am inclined to think the woman is being sincere when she says it made her feel uncomfortable.

OK, so there are degrees of that and I am inclined to think most women become uncomfortable these days but most suppress the urge to comment on it, usually dismissing the ping of fear as an unrealistic fear... which in most cases it is. Off handed comments can be dismissed sometimes because the speaker is just weird and awkward moments do occur, or because flirtatiousness is considered normal by some people but the lines are greyed, or because subtle communications are often misunderstood ... like just trying to break the ice in a new crowd but not coming off well. etc a thousand times.

There are lots of ways women should be using comfort radar. Sitting next to a guy in class, some guy walks in your cube, elevators, standing in line, walking down the street etc. Conversations in all settings tend to start with small talk or business but venture into personal stuff. That is quite normal. Culture has changed and the presumed protection of kinship guardians has pretty much vanished. There is lots of justifiable cause for feeling discomfort. However, the H word is too easy to throw around now and after Clinton it pretty much lost it's umph, some women abuse it as leverage in self promotion or just as an attention getting ploy, leaving us with little to go on.
