Why are very liberal areas like a Boulder so expensive the hippies of the 60's counter culture could never afford to live their today?.

I would speculate that there are strong restrictions (de facto and de jure ) on new construction in Boulder. I know that's the case for much of the desirable parts of the SF Bay Area. Berkeley California actually has fewer housing units now than in 1980.

Berkeley, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco all experienced declines in population in the 70s (and for SF and Seattle.. also the 60s..)which were markedly reversed in the 80s.

Of course predominately liberal areas do not always translate to high / appreciating real estate prices.. think Detroit.
