NEWS: Amoco Installs GigWorks Fibre Channel Network

Network Fully Operational in Less Than Two Days
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Corporation's (NYSE: AN) New
Orleans-based Offshore Business Unit is turning to Fibre Channel technology to
expedite the transfer of large seismic data files across its computer network,
installing a GigWorks Fibre Channel network from Ancor Communications, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ANCR).
Delbert Johnson, Amoco technical consultant, said network performance is a
priority in supporting seismic research and production operations.
"Geoscismic modeling is a demanding, data-intensive application that can
easily exceed the capabilities of traditional network technologies," he
explained. "We needed a high-performance solution that we could implement
quickly and without disruption to our research and modeling efforts."
The Amoco network uses a GigWorks 266 Fibre Switch to connect Sun and
Silicon Graphics servers where terabytes of seismic data are stored. Amoco
geophysicists pull data files from these servers to desktop workstations,
where they run complex visualization, modeling and analysis applications. The
GigWorks network delivers sustained 20 megabyte per-second performance in this
data-intensive environment.
"Fibre Channel offers superior reliability and quality of service for
mission-critical applications," said Cal Nelson, Ancor president. "Our
technology gave Amoco a performance boost without compromising productivity or
data integrity during installation. Each of these is a critical factor that's
focused on a single common outcome -- to help our customers maintain a
competitive edge."
Nelson said the Fibre Channel network was installed in just a couple
working days, replacing ATM at this location. "Down-time simply isn't
acceptable in this kind of production environment," he said. "With Fibre
Channel, we were able to provide a solution that offers the performance,
reliability and simplicity to best support this environment."
About Fibre Channel
Fibre Channel is an ANSI-standard, high-speed, low-latency data
communications technology that provides gigabit-per-second transmission rates
in storage/server environments and high-performance networks. Ancor
GigWorks(TM) products combine the speed and simplicity of channels with the
flexibility of networks to solve bandwidth problems caused by the transfer of
large data files among storage, server and client nodes in high-performance
compute environments. Ancor Fibre Channel products provide optimal speed and
throughput for data-intensive applications such as shared storage, CAD/CAM,
visualization, data mining and file backup.
About Ancor Communications
Ancor Communications, Inc. provides GigWorks(TM) high-performance storage
and data-intensive network solutions based on Fibre Channel technology. The
company was the first to deliver a Fibre Channel switch, and the first to top
the one-gigabit performance level. In addition to Fibre Channel switches,
Ancor products also include adapters and connectivity solutions. Ancor is a
member of the Fibre Channel Association, Fibre Channel Loop Community, the
ANSI Standards Committee and the University of New Hampshire Fibre Channel
Consortium to promote the advancement of Fibre Channel standards and
