The National Institutes of Health is outlining the 21st century agenda for women's health at this week's conference entitled: "Beyond Hunt Valley: Research on Women's Health for the 21st Century." This meeting is a follow-up to the 1991 conference held in Hunt Valley, MD.

Representative Constance A. Morella was a speaker at this conference. Reuters said "Representative Morella called for more research to combat sexually transmitted diseases. Each year 12 million STD cases are reported in the United States. Twenty-five percent of those are among teenagers, translating into a rate of 1 in 8 teens infected with STD. Those are only the reported cases, said Morella. Health experts estimate that about 1 in 4 sexually active teens become infected. The gonorrhea rates in this country approximate those in the developing world, and infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) is the single most important risk factor for invasive cervical cancer, said Representative Morella. It's essential that we develop MICROBICIDAL PRODUCTS, products to prevent transmissions of STD's with an emphasis on methods that women can AFFORD and CONTROL WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR PARTNERS, said Morella, who is also pushing legislation for more HIV research for women."
