Rovi Helps Providers Enhance Users' Experience and Extend Benefits of All-Digital Network
As service providers convert their networks from analog to digital, they can introduce DTAs to allow subscribers to continue to use their analog TV sets to view their cable video package. A DTA is a small device that is installed at the subscriber's location and converts digital TV signals into an analog format. With the introduction of a Rovi Guide for SD DTAs, service providers will have the added benefit of enabling subscribers to get a more robust user experience that includes the ability to tune channels directly from the program grid, set parental controls, as well as view extended information about TV programs.
The Rovi Guide for SD DTAs is planned to provide a consistent guide experience across multiple hardware vendors and conditional access systems, maximize the capabilities of the hardware, and utilize the existing Rovi guide infrastructure for data delivery.
In some regions, analog CATV (cable TV) subscribers still outnumber digital CATV subscribers. For example, according to SNL Kagan, in Latin America there are currently 17 million basic cable analog subscribers, compared to only 8.7 million digital subscribers.
"Not every television in the home has transitioned from a standard analog TV to a digital high-definition set. The Rovi Guide for SD DTAs is designed to help service providers enjoy the benefits of an all-digital network, while continuing to support customers that have standard analog TV sets," said Corey Ferengul, executive vice president of Products at Rovi. "This is a win for both service providers and subscribers. Service providers can recover bandwidth to leverage in new ways, and subscribers get clear benefits from the intuitive user interface and robust IPG experience provided by Rovi's interactive guide."
