Compaq De Mexico 3Q97 Sales Rose 68% Year-Year To $67.5M

MEXICO CITY (AP-Dow Jones)--Compaq Computer de Mexico, S.A., an affiliate of U.S.-based Compaq Computer Corporation, reported Wednesday third-quarter sales totaled $67.5 million, up 68% from $40.0 million in the like 1996 period.

Compaq marketing director Roberto Moctezuma said the sharp increase in sales 'allowed us to pull further ahead of our competitors' in the Mexican market.

Moctezuma said that by Sept. 30, 1997, Compaq increased its market participation by 3.3 percentage points to 18.7%. Competitor IBM has 11.9%, Acer 11.6%, and others 57.8%.

According to data from U.S. consulting firm Dataquest, in the July-September period, 858,648 personal computers were sold in the Mexican market.
