If one looks at the real underbelly of enforced chastity & the far reaching effects of extreme sexual repression one can certainly draw other conclusions . This rule of the priests popes & mullahs on down the centuries certainly did not prevent the rulers & wealthy from indulging in every sin & sexual gratification , the hypocrisy here is triumphant in absolutely Biblical proportions . Arguing the case of ancient Greek pagan homosexuality is about as retarded & lame as arguing for the pure chastity of the ancient Hebrews (and later Christians)that resulted in stonings & vicious torments for any that crossed ultra stringent laws governing marriage , sex & human expression of love followed in history down thru to the still lingering extreme sexual repression in USA of today and the Arab worlds . What you always get when you try to legislate or religiously sublimate human desire to love & be loved , being a social mammal & primate you will get these warped reactions & extreme counter reactions everytime to the taboos that have followed both Christian , Jew & Moslem religous dogmas around like a demon dog . The vicious wars between Christians or the vicous wars they waged are a matter of history books . I will assume as well there is also something to do with the life span increasing in modern times vs antiquity where marriage was done far earlier but in this area of human mating & sexual expression , of what is permitted or not has never been fully or adequately defined and is still evolving . Certainly one thinks of our being a permissive society but further explored i think one would find the reality , not the case , being a Christian Nation with 50% divorce rates states there is something amiss ... There certainly is something in that Medieval romanticism of the literal interpretation of the message of "Love" that will always find appeal among the broad range of human beings , for it is in our "Nature" to love , if you like to call that God so be it but some call it "Nature" and are just as well off in saying so. A rose by any other name ... i know my roses smell lovely & sweet .
