It is sad but species have been going extinct since long before we showed up. The human race will too one day. Of course, I don't think it will be at all sad when we are wiped out. We are a cancer on this earth spreading and devouring everything that stands in the way of our narcissistic pleasures. I don't like us very well. People, and I am more guilty than most, tend to romanticize nature. The reality is, nature is harsh and often cruel. It's simply the nature of things.
