In 1991 when the USSR melted away, Russia's satellites wanted to be Sweden. They wanted a Third Way. They did not want to face the cold capitalism out of the COMECOM*. They wanted a soft way out. Western European countries, forgetting that it was the Marshall Plan that made them rich as a showcase of American capitalism to show the USSR, were proud of seeing their victory and the COMECOM failing, and their way of life being emulated. Mostly when they were about to start Europe 1992.

A fresh market was laid free for Europeans to explore and buy on the cheap. In less than 2 decades the former COMECOM countries were deep in debt and saw the markets for their products vanish from one day to another as Europe artificial wealth disappeared.

What the Western Europeans also seems to have forgotten is that their wealth was no longer need after USSR collapsed. There was no need to artificially make them rich to display at the USSR’s doors. Thus the EU artificially kept their wealth long after they needed to be shown as rich. Former USSR satellites joined the party too late.

* Council for Mutual Economic Assistance English abbreviation COMECON, CMEA, or CAME), 1949–1991, was an economic organisation under hegemony of Soviet Union comprising the countries of the Eastern Bloc along with a number of communist states elsewhere in the world. The Comecon was the Eastern Bloc's reply to the formation of the Organization for European Economic Co-operation in western Europe. [1]
