Barter of goods, wealth being based on human and animal efficiency was the basis of all wealth originally.
When the horse collar was developed, and animals became more productive, human wealth increased.
The basic things that increased wealth were language, fire, the atl-atl, the bow, animal husbandry, writing, the horse collar, agriculture, pottery, weaving, salt preservation of foods, the wheel and the bearing, smelting and metals, the stirrup, the plow, glass, concrete, sailing, coin of the realm, human organization, i.e. government and civilization, plant genetics and breeding, mathematics, the school system and universities, printing, the astrolabe/sextant scientific navigation and exploration, the chronometer, power looms, advanced metallurgy, black powder and musketry, bank credit notes, vaccination, discovery of microbes & modern medicine, steam power, dynamite, modern engineering, penicillin, science and communication ( chemicals, telegraph and telephone), better public health, internal combustion engine, flight, radio, electric light, rubber tires, mass production, macadamized roads, electricity, AC power, heavy equipment and heavy industry, electronic computation, air travel.
Then they invented the credit card and things have been going down hill steadily ever since.
