People don't "just" upgrade their installed software, if it is at all complex, and if it is critical to running their business. They test the bejeezus out of it. Frequently they run both the old and the new parallel for some period of time, to make sure that the new is running properly, before going "live" with it. This means they have to add more storage for the testing stage.
