Comdex is very interesting this year. Fibre
Channel is part of the buzz.

Adaptec seems the most confident FC play right
now. They have lots of product which will impact
the PC market---particularly the NT cluster
arena. One young company which has caught the
eye of the smart money is Gadzoox Networks.
They seem to have the best talent and brainpower
needed to make the breakthrough applications
to promote SAN. The company was demonstrating
a FC-AL switch alongside Adaptec. I
did not get a close look at it, but heard
favorable comments among my friends.

The Fibre Channel Loop Community (FCLC) area
was about 50% larger than last year. There was
good traffic when I went through the booths.

Both Ancor and Brocade were doing a good job.
I did not hear of any disasters or failures.
I ran into some folks who chatted with Hendrickson
and came away with good impressions.

This may sound superficial, but my take on
the Brocade versus Ancor comparison is based
on style. Brocade comes across as a Silicon
Valley firm with all the natural associations
attributed to its locale. Ancor does not
have that "insider" feel to it, but they have
a unmistakable confidence about the performance
of their new product.

The heavy hitters were the disk drive makers.
Seagate was selling FC hard. I am dumping
my interests in RAID vendors like Ciprico because
I suspect the drive companies will squeeze them
in 1998.
